greenhouse gas accounting and modeling

Eco-Products engaged Lotus to calculate our 2015 operational carbon footprint. This involved collecting and analyzing data for greenhouse gas emissions from our headquarters’ electricity and natural gas, business travel, employee commuting, materials management, and paper consumption. It also entailed updating our Excel-based tracking system and incorporating data for a company we recently acquired. Throughout the process, Hillary provided helpful suggestions and options. She documented all of the changes and decisions in an organized fashion, and submitted her work promptly. It could not have gone any more smoothly, and I can’t recommend Lotus highly enough. This was Eco-Products’ first time working with them, and it won’t be our last!”

Park City worked with Lotus Sustainability on our community-wide carbon footprint.  The team at Lotus made the process seamless and thorough.  The report is transparent and a great community resource."

Greenhouse Gas Accounting

We have experience helping over 40 organizations account for their greenhouse gas emissions. Our experience has ranged from supporting organizations with their first greenhouse gas assessments and setting organizations boundaries to working with experienced Fortune 500 organizations.

We have completed inventories using the following protocols:

  • Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)

  • Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC)

  • Local Government Operations Protocol (LGOP)

  • Recycling and Composting Emissions Protocol

  • U.S. Community Protocol for Accounting and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Community Protocol)

  • 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories

Completed greenhouse gas emission inventories and inventory updates for the public sector. We have helped dozens of communities create GPC compliant greenhouse gas inventories. Alongside these inventories, we have created accompanying data management tools designed to easily input inventory values into ICLEI's ClearPath. We have also updated past greenhouse inventories to be GPC compliant.

We have ICLEI ClearPath expertise. ICLEI's ClearPath tool has become one of the leading software platforms to track climate action plans, greenhouse gas inventories and forecasts, and monitor community-wide goals. Lotus has supported numerous municipalities with their data entry, goal setting, and forecasting in ClearPath to ensure that their data is accurately entered and to help prevent double counting with neighboring jurisdictions.

Developed the first greenhouse gas inventory for a Colorado school district and worked with the Sustainability Indicators Management & Analysis Platform (SIMAP) to report results. The inventory tool developed by Lotus allows the District to effectively measure and analyze emissions trends over the years, and integration into the SIMAP platform provides the District with a tool for comparing emissions and impacts over time.

Created Inventory Management Plans for multiple clients to ensure that they can update their greenhouse gas inventories in the future without a consultants support.

Developed tools and greenhouse gas inventories for numerous private sector clients. We have created tools to track data, normalize energy use for weather, and visualize data for decision making. Lotus has also provided due-diligence support for three Fortune 500 companies Third Party Verification of GHG Emissions Inventory.

customized emissions tracking and forecasting tools

We have created many tools for our clients to help them make financial, policy, and business decisions for sustainability initiatives. These models and qualitative spreadsheets have then been used to help guide the decision-making process at key milestones. They have also been used to track participation and progress, and measure outcomes towards success. Our goal is to always ensure that our clients can use the tool on their own in future years when a consultant is not available.

Modeled the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction potential of various strategies and compared against key qualitative secondary benefits. We have worked with multiple clients (including Boulder County) to model the impact of various sustainability strategies; these models have included both direct environmental impact and secondary benefits, such as impacts to environmental justice, impacts to public health, and feasibility of implementation. In addition, we have estimated initial and ongoing costs and time commitments for programs and policies.

Set GHG emission reduction targets and, if that target is already set, identify strategies that will ultimately achieve those reductions. We have worked with communities and private sector clients to use models of emissions impacts and secondary benefits to develop, revise, and adopt strategies that will achieve each projects’ unique goals.
